What is gum disease?

Gum disease is an infection of the tissues that hold your teeth in place. It starts as gingivitis, with red, bleeding gums, and can progress to periodontitis, where the bone supporting the teeth is gradually lost.

Plaque and tartar build up below the gum line and trigger inflammation. Left untreated, this leads to gum recession, loose teeth, bad breath, and eventually tooth loss, which is why early treatment matters.

Clear, staged pricingYou see the cost per quadrant up front, with no pressure to do more than is needed.

Gentle, step by step.

1

Gum examination

We measure pocket depths around each tooth and check for bleeding, recession, and mobility to stage the disease.

2

X-rays for bone levels

Radiographs show how much supporting bone remains so treatment is planned accurately.

3

Scaling and polishing

Plaque and tartar above the gum line are removed and the teeth are polished to slow further build-up.

4

Deep cleaning (root planing)

For deeper pockets, we clean the root surfaces below the gum line under local anaesthesia, usually quadrant by quadrant.

5

Flap surgery if needed

In advanced cases, the gum is gently lifted to clean deep deposits and reshape tissue, then sutured back.

6

Maintenance and recall

We set a 3 to 6 month recall schedule and coach your home cleaning to keep the gums stable long term.

Signs to watch for.

Have two or more of these? Contact us for an assessment and the appropriate next step.

01
Bleeding when brushingGums that bleed during brushing or flossing are an early and common sign of inflammation that should not be ignored.
02
Red or swollen gumsHealthy gums are firm and pink. Puffy, tender, or dark red gums point to active infection.
03
Persistent bad breathBacteria trapped in deep gum pockets often cause a lingering bad taste or breath that brushing does not fix.
04
Receding gumsIf your teeth look longer or feel sensitive at the necks, the gum line may be pulling away from the teeth.
05
Loose or shifting teethTeeth that feel loose or have started to drift can signal that supporting bone has been lost.
06
Pus or tender gumsDischarge between the tooth and gum, or gums that hurt when pressed, needs prompt assessment.

No surprises at billing.

Early gingivitis is reversible with professional cleaning and good home care. Once it advances to periodontitis with bone loss, treatment controls it but the lost bone does not fully grow back.
