First: Do Not Panic
A sudden, severe toothache is frightening - especially at night. But most dental emergencies can be managed temporarily until you reach a dentist. Here are the steps our emergency patients in Hyderabad should follow.
6 Immediate Steps for Toothache Relief
Step 1: Rinse with Warm Salt Water
Mix half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water. Rinse gently for 30 seconds. This reduces inflammation and kills surface bacteria. Repeat every 30 minutes.
Step 2: Take an Over-the-Counter Pain Reliever
- Ibuprofen (Combiflam/Brufen) - best for dental pain because it reduces both pain and inflammation
- Dosage: 400mg for adults (do not exceed 1200mg in 24 hours)
- Avoid aspirin - it can increase bleeding
- Do NOT place a painkiller directly on the gum - this causes chemical burns
Step 3: Apply a Cold Compress
Wrap ice in a cloth and hold against your cheek for 15 minutes on the painful side. This reduces swelling and numbs the area.
Step 4: Elevate Your Head
When lying down, use an extra pillow to keep your head elevated. This reduces blood flow to the area and lessens throbbing pain.
Step 5: Avoid Triggers
- Do not eat hot or cold foods
- Do not chew on the painful side
- Avoid sweet, acidic, or hard foods
- Do not probe the tooth with your tongue or finger
Step 6: Clove Oil (Optional)
Apply a small amount of clove oil on a cotton ball and dab it on the painful area. Eugenol in clove oil is a natural anesthetic. Available at most pharmacies in Hyderabad.
