When Should Your Child First Visit the Dentist?
The Indian Dental Association recommends a child's first dental visit by age 1 or within 6 months of the first tooth appearing. Most parents in Hyderabad wait until age 3-5, which is too late for preventive care.
At Dent Health in Banjara Hills, our pedodontist Dr. Deepika sees children from age 1 onwards.
Why So Early?
Early dental visits are not about treatment - they are about prevention
- Detect early signs of cavities before they cause pain
- Check jaw and bite development
- Identify thumb-sucking or pacifier habits that may affect teeth
- Educate parents on proper cleaning techniques
- Establish a positive relationship with the dentist (prevents future anxiety)
What Happens During the First Visit
The first visit is designed to be fun and non-threatening:
For children under 3
- Parent holds the child on their lap during examination
- Dr. Deepika gently examines the teeth, gums, and jaw
- No instruments - just a small mirror and soft toothbrush
- Brief fluoride application if needed
- Cleaning and diet guidance for parents
For children 3-6
- Child sits in the dental chair (with parent nearby)
- Gentle teeth cleaning
- X-rays only if necessary
- Fluoride treatment
- Discussion about brushing technique and diet
How to Prepare Your Child
Do
- Use positive language: "The dentist will count your teeth!"
- Read children's books about dental visits
- Play "dentist" at home - let them examine a stuffed animal's teeth
- Schedule morning appointments (children are freshest)
- Bring their favourite toy for comfort
Do not
- Use words like "pain," "needle," "drill," or "shot"
- Share your own dental anxiety stories
- Bribe them with sugary treats (ironic and counterproductive)
- Wait until there is a problem - emergency visits are scary
