The crown of the tooth consists of a three-layered structure. These layers are known as enamel, dentin, and pulp. A dental filling can be used to treat the decay that has attacked the first two layers of a tooth. However, if the decay or cavity has reached the third layer (pulp), then root canal treatment is needed. The infection of the pulp may cause some serious infections and can result in tooth extraction also.
This treatment is conducted on the damaged or infected tooth. The infection can be because of a broken or cracked tooth, gum issues, deep decay, etc. Root canal treatment stops the infection from spreading and relieves you from the pain of inflammation.
If you ignore the symptoms and avoid getting root canal treatment in time, then the nerves in your teeth will slowly die and the infection will spread rapidly. The infection can enter into the tissues of the jaw and gum and also lead to serious health conditions such as heart disease and stroke.
The dentist takes an x-ray to determine the extent of the damage and the infection. The doctor will numb the area around the infected area before starting the treatment. The next step in the procedure is cavity preparation. The cavity is prepared and all the previous filling and tooth material are removed. A proper channel to treat the inner part of the tooth is established. After the infected pulp is cleaned out, the canals are shaped and cleaned. The newly cleaned and disinfected canals are sealed and filled with filling material (Gutta-Percha). The last step is to restore the crown of the tooth cavity with a filling and crown cementation.
The dental filling to be used will depend on the decay condition and the allergy history of patients with metals. The types of fillings that are available are:
Composite Filling
Composite fillings are preferred by those who don’t want their fillings to be visible. These fillings have the natural color of the teeth. This type of dental filling is recommended for front teeth and chipped teeth. Composite fillings bond extremely well with the tooth structure. Compared to other dental fillings like amalgam and metal, this one wears off quickly.
Amalgam Filling
Of all the fillings, the amalgam fillings are the strongest as they are made of a mix of several metals. They are the first preference for many dentists as they are widely used and researched.
Ceramic or porcelain filling.
Porcelain fillings are produced on request; these are bonded to the teeth. This filling can be matched to the color of your teeth. Most importantly, it covers a larger part of your teeth and resists staining.
Metal Filling
The metal fillings are also made to order and then cemented in place. The metal filling is long-lasting, and gold filling is more expensive compared to silver. Gold is the preferred choice for dentists as it is well tolerated by the gum tissues, withstands chewing forces, and lasts for more than 15-20 years.

Yes, the teeth will recover within a few days after the treatment. Although the patient may experience slight pain once the anesthesia wears off, the pain will end quickly with the medications.
Sensitivity to hot and cold beverages, swollen gums, tooth discoloration, chipped or broken teeth, pain while eating, etc. .
