Wisdom Teeth Removal

What is wisdom tooth removal?

Between the ages of 17 and 25, the last molars, or wisdom teeth, appear in an average person. For some patients, the eruption can be seen in late adulthood too. Wisdom teeth only need to be extracted if they erupt misaligned, as they can cause damage to adjacent teeth if there is not enough space for them to erupt. The misaligned wisdom teeth make it difficult to clean the bacteria, which can result in serious dental diseases. Impacted and buried teeth can only be removed through minor surgery, which is usually conducted by a dentist or an oral surgeon.

Why does a person need a wisdom tooth extraction?

There are a total of four sets of wisdom teeth, two on each upper and lower jaw. Impacted teeth are a common occurrence in most people. If there is not enough room for the teeth to erupt, they may erupt partially or not at all. It can grow at the angle of the adjacent tooth (second molar), towards the back of the mouth, etc.

In some cases, the wisdom teeth usually erupt normally without causing any issues. But if you have an impacted wisdom tooth, then there are chances that your wisdom tooth will remain intact in the soft tissues and break through the gums. With misaligned teeth, it is difficult to brush or floss properly, making your teeth prone to gum disease and decay.

The infection with bacteria will lead to pain, illness, and swelling in the jaw. As long as your wisdom tooth is not misaligned, you don’t have to remove it. They only need to be removed if they are impacted or are causing crowding. The dentist recommends removing it at an early stage, as the bones in your mouth become harder as you age.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction Procedure

The extraction procedure depends on the stage of the wisdom tooth. Most dentists would agree that removing a fully erupted wisdom tooth is quite easy. However, when the tooth is impacted, it will require an incision in the gums. They usually remove the tooth in parts to reduce the amount of bone required for tooth extraction.

The dentist will administer you with local anesthesia to numb the gums. The next step involves removing the gum tissues that cover the area around the wisdom tooth. Once the gum tissues are removed, it is time to remove the bone that blocks the root of the wisdom tooth. Divide the tooth into sections as it will make it easier to remove the tooth. Once the tooth is removed, clean the area and stitch the wound to promote healing.

Different types of dental fillings

The dental filling to be used will depend on the decay condition and the allergy history of patients with metals. The types of fillings that are available are:

Composite Filling
Composite fillings are preferred by those who don’t want their fillings to be visible. These fillings have the natural color of the teeth. This type of dental filling is recommended for front teeth and chipped teeth. Composite fillings bond extremely well with the tooth structure. Compared to other dental fillings like amalgam and metal, this one wears off quickly.

Amalgam Filling
Of all the fillings, the amalgam fillings are the strongest as they are made of a mix of several metals. They are the first preference for many dentists as they are widely used and researched.

Ceramic or porcelain filling.
Porcelain fillings are produced on request; these are bonded to the teeth. This filling can be matched to the color of your teeth. Most importantly, it covers a larger part of your teeth and resists staining.

Metal Filling
The metal fillings are also made to order and then cemented in place. The metal filling is long-lasting, and gold filling is more expensive compared to silver. Gold is the preferred choice for dentists as it is well tolerated by the gum tissues, withstands chewing forces, and lasts for more than 15-20 years.
